35 Basic styling rules for women. The best fashion advice of all time.

While the trends come and go, & fashion outdates quickly, style is forever.

I hope you are not only gaining knowledge from my blog but also enjoying my feed :D I would be really happy if you take a moment to follow my blog. Now, let's get going.

Today, I'm gonna share 35 basic styling rules with you lovely people. I hope you like it.

Rule #1 : Balance it out.

This is something I always try to keep in mind when I’m styling outfits. Pairing something oversized with something slim fitting is the perfect contrast for an outfit. For example, if you are wearing a big oversized sweater then maybe wear slim fitted bottoms, and flowing / loose fitted bottoms with a slim fitted top. Of course I don’t religiously live by this because sometimes I love a full slim fitted outfit, but when you’re stuck this is a good thing to keep in mind!

Rule #2 : Edit your closet.

Clothes need breathing room! You should be able to see every item without scrabbling around in. Consider donating anything you haven't worn in the past years. I do this frequently & believe me it is so satisfying...

Rule #3 : Wearing white? Seek out light.

Keep in mind : White clothes always look more see through in daylight. Check yourself out in a bright setting to be safe.

Rule #4 : Always check out the rear view.

And don't leave the house until you like what you see in the mirror. Every angle matters. Trust me.

Rule #5 : Don't follow every trend.

There's an old saying which goes : "trends fade, style is forever"–the most stylish people are those who are comfortable in their own skin, regardless of whether their outfit is 'in' or not. Not every trend is going to work for your body, style or budget, & that's okay.

Rule #6 : Ensure a proper fit.

Avoid pieces that don't properly fit, no matter how cute. Every clothing item you own should glide over the body & never suction at any area. If it's too tight go up a size – it'll be a lot more comfortable & appropriate.

Rule #7 : Be confident.

Your confidence is affected by what you're wearing. You look better only when you feel better. Always wear confidence in yourself & your style.

Rule #8: Mix prints & patterns.

Doubling up on patterns can help you come across as confident & stylish - or as if you got dressed in the dark. To achieve an elegant look stick to the same color family & preferably the same background shade. You can mix polka dots with stripes or florals. Leopard print with a non-critter pattern. Paisely with squares or checks. Near matches is a big no-no.

Rule #9: Invest in staples.

Coats, blazers, basic white tee, etc are the pieces that don't fall into the trends of the season, but will instead last you forever. It's better to spend more on one item then have to re-buy it multiple times due to poor quality.

Rule #10: Denim is your bff.

A good pair of jeans can change everything. As can a denim button-up or denim jacket.

Rule #11: Underwear lines aren’t your friend.

Isn’t that the truth? If you are wearing something very form fitting & you can see your underwear lines through it then it ruins the whole outfit because that’s all your eyes are drawn to. Opt for seamless undies to avoid any underwear situations.

Rule #12: The right bra makes you look slimmer.

Same above rule goes for bra straps. Invest in a comfortable nude strapless bra when you are wearing tops with funky straps. A correct bra type is an important thing to keep in mind while wearing different kind of wears( ethnic, western, traditional ).

Rule #13: Buy fun colours.

Play around different colour clothing no matter whether you like that colour or not. You should always own some nudes, pastels and solids. After all, we never know when to pull off a particular colour for the theme functions.

Rule #14: Don't forget your hair.

There's no use in dressing well & then leaving your hair undone (unless you're blessed with amazing natural hair of course...which I'm definitely not). Find a hairstyle that you can master really quickly, & that looks great on you to polish up your look.

Rule #15: Your LBD is your best friend.

Believe me! you just don't know in how many different ways you can wear your "Little Black Dress" often. It is a must have piece in your closet.

Rule #16: Recognize the power of accessories.

The best way to channel a trend in a subtle way is to invest in good accessories. A simple outfit can be magically transformed just by adding some appropriate accessories.

Rule #17: Don't save your outfits.

Okay, so there is a time and a place for a lehenga, but why keep some of your  favourite pieces locked away in the wardrobe just because you don't have an 'occasion' to wear them to? Create the occasion! Those leather leggings will look fabulous underneath a casual sweater. And, that floral skirt will go perfectly with a plain T-shirt. Go for it!

Rule #18: Try men's clothing.

Don't let the gender on the label prevent you from experimenting. Guy's have it so easy. Their recipe to look good involves a simple button-up & a nice pair of pants, so why don't we also wear this look time-to-time? You girls should know that you can wear a T-shirt in many different styles. Do checkout my earlier post on this topic.

Rule #19: Show skin selectively.

Don't give people too many things to look at all at once. Example, if you're wearing a low neckline top or an off-shoulder top then don't pair it with shorts, instead, wear a trouser or jeans.

Rule #20: Don't try hard to look stylish.

Wearing pieces & outfit combinations that never go out of style (e.g., skinny jeans, black turtle neck, ankle boots, white basic tee, etc) ensures you'll never look like you're trying too hard. Afterall, effortlessness is key for timeless style.

Rule #21: Be careful while buying items.

Shop for the correct clothes to make you look good. When you are shopping for clothes make sure that you are conscious of how the colours & cuts are going to look on you.

Rule #22: Don't hesitate to spend on good quality stuff.

Sometimes you just can't beat the comfort of an expensive pair of shoes, or the quality of a stunning leather bag. Don't be afraid to spend money on costly pieces. It can take you anywhere & stand a long time.

Rule #23: Find your 'signature style' and stick with it.

Find your own signature style or look that you know you love & you know looks great on you then dressing becomes much easier. For me personally, I love tops with mid-length necklines. I own numerous different tops in a variety of styles, textures & patterns with mid-length necklines & I know when I'm in a rush I have that signature style to fall back on and pull something together.

Rule #24: Don't be too matchy matchy.

Strive to wear colours that enhance one another rather than "match" in the traditional sense. For an easy hack, look at a simple colour wheel. the colours that are opposite to each other on the wheel complement each other.

Rule #25: Resole shoes that you love.

If you have a pair of adored shoes you have worn a hundred times, why not spend some money getting things them fixed rather than finding another pair that will never be quite the same? Naturally, this is more important when you have spent more money on the shoes initially, rather than a cheap pair of flats.

Rule #26: Don't overdo belts.

The belt is meant to give you a waist or hold your pants up. There are times however, the belt should be left at home. If an outfit is already fitted, then there is no need for a belt. Use belts sparingly rather than often.

Rule #27: Pay attention to washing labels.

All of us did this mistake at least once in the lifetime. We just ignore the washing labels on the clothes & end up ruining our favourite clothes. We can avoid that by following the instructions that they apply on our clothing to keep them the size & color we started with.

Rule #28: Invest in good undergarments.

Wearing nice undergarments every day will make you feel special. It will make your clothes hang better & be infinitely more comfy.

Rule #29: Don’t pretend it fits.

We've all been there, standing in the dressing room and convincing ourselves that the button will magically stay closed when we get home (and then, of course, it doesn't). These are the times where we have to accept that our bodies have changed in one way or another, and buy clothes that fit. Because you know what happens to the clothes that don't fit (cue garbage bags being dropped off at Goodwill here).

Rule #30: Think strategically.

Assess your closet before hitting the mall. Figure out what pieces your closet is seriously lacking for the next season and attack the shops accordingly. If you really want to stay on track, make a list.

Rule #31: Work clothes need not be unstylish.

Just because you have to dress office casual doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. Find well-tailored pieces and incorporate accessories and colour to create a more exciting look.

Rule #32: Learn basic sewing skills.

If you can mend hems or resew buttons, life will be so much easier. You'll never have to pay for little fixes ever again.

Rule #33: Watches are timeless.

Watches are awesome. They are classic and can represent your personality. And if you invest in a good one, it could last you a lifetime.

Rule #34: Wear sunglasses.

You only have one set of eyes, so why not protect them in style?

Rule #35: Comfort is key.

We’re all about trying out new trends, but attempting to pull off something you don’t feel comfortable is simply isn’t smart. You always want to feel confident in your outfit, so why force yourself? It’s never a bad thing to stick to what you know. Also, if it’s literally uncomfortable – too itchy, too tight, too painful – then ditch it.
